Breast Lift

Breast Lift in Beverly Hills & Los Angeles, CA

Have your breasts lost their youthful perkiness? Young breasts are tight, firm, and teardrop rounded, sitting high on the chest wall with no droop. Then age, pregnancy, and gravity happen. As the body ages, the skin and breast tissue ligaments lose elasticity. Gravity begins to take its toll on heavy breasts, pulling them downward. Pregnancy and weight loss compound the problem. Breasts that were once perky and full are now flattened, droopy, and deflated. What’s the solution to breast changes resulting from pregnancy, weight loss, and aging? A surgical breast lift, also called a mastopexy, with Dr. Ryan Stanton can restore your breasts to a more youthful appearance and that rounded shape.

This guide provides an overview of breast lift. To get your specific questions answered, don’t hesitate to call our office at (310) 278-0077.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?

If you have sagging, pendulous breasts, odds are you’re a good candidate for breast lift surgery. Of course, it is a little more complex than that, so we recommend coming in for a consultation with Dr. Stanton if you’re considering Los Angeles breast lift surgery. He will examine your breasts and discuss the procedure in-depth, helping you to determine if this procedure is right for you. If a breast lift is not necessary, he may recommend other breast procedures, like breast augmentation or breast reduction, that may better achieve your aesthetic goals. A breast lift addresses several common breast changes, including those caused by aging, pregnancy, and weight loss.

The breasts go through many changes because of the aging process. One of the most significant is a decline in skin and breast tissue elasticity. As the skin and ligaments relax, they become less able to support the weight of the breast tissues, and the breasts may begin to droop and sag. Hormonal changes decrease breast size as women lose breast tissue substance. A breast lift removes excess skin, addressing changes in skin elasticity, and restructures the breasts to restore a more youthful breast shape.

Breast changes are dramatic during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The breasts typically increase in size significantly during late pregnancy and breastfeeding. These size changes can stretch out skin and supportive tissues, leading to significant postpartum sagging. The breast tissues also soften, losing firmness and substance. A breast lift can restore firmness and shape to the breast tissues after pregnancy and breastfeeding. We commonly include breast lift surgery in our mommy makeover procedures.

The breasts can contain a significant amount of fat. Losing weight shrinks fat cells and thus the breasts as well. With substantial weight loss, the changes to breasts can be significant, and may include deflation, then sagging. A mastopexy addresses these changes, restoring a full, rounded, and youthful breast appearance.

Do you need a breast lift? As you wait for your consultation, we have a simple DIY option for assessing your degree of breast sagging at home. Stand in front of the mirror and compare the position of your nipple to the inframammary fold—the crease underneath the breast. If your nipple falls below the fold, you will likely benefit from a breast lift

Breast Lift with Breast Augmentation

Dr. Stanton is meticulous about creating some of the best cosmetic breast surgery results in Southern California. To create these stunning breast transformations, he often combines procedures. Breast augmentation pairs beautifully with mastopexy for women who need additional breast volume/substance or desire an increase in size.

While a breast lift reshapes and tightens the breasts, breast augmentation uses an implant to increase breast volume. Breast implants also add fullness to the upper breasts, crucial when correcting a loss of upper pole fullness that occurs with aging and pregnancy.

During your consultation, Dr. Stanton will let you know if breast implants are a good idea to enhance your breast lift results.

Recovery After a Breast Lift

Patients typically recover from breast lift surgery at home, leaving our facility just a few hours after their procedure. You will not be able to drive due to the anesthesia, so you will need a trusted adult to accompany you home and remain with you for at least the first night. If you have no one, we work closely with several nursing services and recovery centers to provide this necessity. Our standard practice is to provide detailed recovery instructions after any surgical procedure. These instructions will outline how to care for your incisions, clean and empty surgical drains (if used), when to return to our office for follow-up care, and what the do’s and don’ts are for the first several weeks. In addition to detailed instructions, we are also available to answer any questions or concerns throughout the mastopexy recovery process.

At first, the breasts will feel tight and tender. You may return home with your breasts snugly wrapped in bandages. Temporary numbness, bruising, and swelling are not uncommon. We will provide pain relief prescription for a more comfortable recovery process. Rest as much as you can and avoid lifting, bending, or straining. Gentle walks every hour or two help with blood circulation, and we recommend starting the day after surgery. Patients typically miss one to two weeks of work. Please restrain from intense exercise and other strenuous activities for four to six weeks after breast lift surgery.

Will I Have Scarring After My Breast Lift?

Scars are always visible immediately after breast surgery. These scars will typically begin to fade, usually starting after the first six to 12 weeks. As the scars age and mature, they will begin to blend into the rest of the skin. Believe it or not, “Mother Nature” dictates that this process can take as long as 18 – 24 months…so be patient. Dr. Stanton typically uses an incision around the areola, +/- an added vertical incision for larger breasts, for mastopexy procedures. This specialized technique hides scarring very effectively, for a natural-looking, but significantly lifted, breast

Will a Mastopexy Affect My Ability to Breastfeed?

A breast lift procedure leaves many of the milk ducts and the nipples intact, preserving the ability to breastfeed in the future for most women. If you’re planning future pregnancies and hope to breastfeed, let Dr. Stanton know, so he can discuss this concern in more detail. Pregnancy can significantly impact the breasts’ shape and appearance. Many women wait for breast lift surgery until they are no longer planning additional pregnancies to ensure longevity of their results.
